Alain quickly became a regular starting goalie for Miami University. Their hockey program had only started playing in NCAA Division I in 1978. He played for four years under coach Steve Cady. In his first year (1980-81), he was named the team's Rookie of the Year. By the end of his college career, he had made 2,440 saves. This is one of the highest totals in Miami University's history.
