Sir Alan Stewart of Dreghorn (died 19 July 1333) was a Scottish nobleman. He was an important knight who fought for Scotland's freedom during a very important time in history.
About Sir Alan Stewart
Sir Alan Stewart was the son of Sir John Stewart and his wife Margaret de Bonkyll. He was a brave Scottish knight. Sir Alan fought alongside Robert the Bruce, who was the King of Scots. He helped King Robert during the First War of Scottish Independence. This was a long fight for Scotland to be free from English rule.
Adventures in Ireland
In 1315, Sir Alan went with Edward Bruce to Ireland. Edward Bruce was King Robert's brother. He was trying to become the King of Ireland. During this trip, Sir Alan was captured by the English in 1316. But he was set free quickly after a payment, called a ransom, was made.
For his loyal service to King Robert the Bruce, Sir Alan received a special gift. On April 28, 1315, he was given lands in Dreghorn in Ayrshire. This showed how much the King valued his help.
His Family and Legacy
Sir Alan Stewart had children with a daughter from the Cameron of Lochiel family. His children were:
- John Stewart of Cruikston and Darnley
- Walter Stewart
- Alexander Stewart of Darnley
- Elizabeth Stewart, who married John fitz Walter. John was the son of Walter fitz Gilbert of Cadzow.
Death at Halidon Hill
Sir Alan Stewart died on July 19, 1333. He was killed during the Battle of Halidon Hill. This was a major battle where Scottish forces fought against the English. Sir Alan died fighting alongside his brothers, Sir James and Sir John Stewart. They all bravely gave their lives for Scotland.
