Alaric Hall, born in 1979, is a British expert in languages and history. He teaches English as an associate professor at the University of Leeds. He also used to lead the Institute for Medieval Studies there. Since 2009, he has helped edit important academic journals like Leeds Studies in English and Leeds Medieval Studies.

His Education Journey

Alaric Hall studied at some famous universities. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), from the University of Cambridge. There, he focused on Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic history and languages.

Later, he went to the University of Glasgow for his Master's degree (M.Phil.) in Medieval Studies. He then completed his Ph.D. in English at the same university. His Ph.D. research was all about elves in Anglo-Saxon England.

Teaching and Research

After his studies, Alaric Hall became a professor at the University of Leeds. He teaches and researches the languages, cultures, and history of Northwest Europe during the Middle Ages. This period is also known as the medieval times.

He has written and edited many books and articles on these topics. He has also written a lot about the Icelandic language and its amazing stories.

His Book on Elves

In 2007, Alaric Hall published a book called Elves in Anglo-Saxon England. This book was very well-received by other experts. Tom Shippey, a medievalist and expert on J.R.R. Tolkien, called it a "very thorough study." Another Tolkien scholar, Dimitra Fimi, said it was a "solidly scholarly work." She noted that it looked closely at language details while also seeing the bigger picture.

Environmental Efforts

Alaric Hall is also very active in protecting the environment. Since 2018, he has often run for election to the Leeds City Council. He represents the Green Party of England and Wales, which focuses on environmental issues.

For many years, he lived in an eco-friendly building in Leeds called Greenhouse. He was involved in community projects in the nearby areas of Beeston and Holbeck. This included helping people during the United Kingdom cladding crisis, which was about unsafe building materials.

Supporting Open Knowledge

Within the world of universities, Alaric Hall strongly supports making research freely available online. This is called open-access publishing. He makes his own research available for anyone to read.

He also helps edit Wikipedia and uses Wikipedia editing in his teaching at the University of Leeds. He is a member of the University and College Union. This union works to support university staff. He was involved in their campaigns during the university strikes in 2013 and between 2018 and 2020.
