The Albacete Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, is a beautiful Roman Catholic church in Albacete, Spain. It's a very important building. In 1982, it was officially named a Bien de Interés Cultural, which means it's a special historical monument in Spain.

History of the Cathedral

When Was It Built?

The church of San Juan was started in 1515. It was built on the same spot where an older Mudéjar building once stood. At that time, Albacete was part of the Diocese of Cartagena.

Changes Over the Years

  • In the 1500s, the original Gothic-style ceilings were taken down. They were replaced with new ones in the Baroque style.
  • During the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the church's bells were melted down. New bells were put in place in 1947.
  • After the war, in 1949, the main front of the church was completed. This was also when the Diocese of Albacete was created. This made the church important enough to become a cathedral.
  • In 1960, the side of the church was finished. It was built in a style called Romanesque Revival.
