Albert IV of Austria (born September 19, 1377 – died September 14, 1404) was an important ruler known as the Duke of Austria. He was part of the powerful House of Habsburg family.
Life of Albert IV
Albert IV was born in the city of Vienna. His father was Albert III of Austria, and his mother was Beatrix of Nuremberg.
He became the Duke of Austria in 1395 and ruled until 1404. During his time, Austria included areas that are now Lower Austria and most of Upper Austria. Other parts of the Habsburg lands were ruled by his relatives from a different branch of the family.
Albert's time as duke had some challenges. He had disagreements with other members of his own family. He also had conflicts with leaders from the Luxemburg family, like Wenceslaus and Sigismund.
Albert IV passed away in 1404 in Klosterneuburg, a town in Lower Austria. He was buried in the Ducal Crypt, a special burial place, inside the famous Stephansdom cathedral in Vienna. His son, Albert, took over as duke after him.
His Family
Albert IV married Joanna Sophia of Bavaria in Vienna on April 24, 1390. Joanna Sophia was the daughter of Albrecht I, who was the Duke of Bavaria-Straubing.
Albert and Joanna Sophia had two children:
- Margarete (born June 26, 1395, in Vienna – died December 24, 1447). She married Duke Henry XVI of Bavaria in 1412.
- Albert V (born August 16, 1397 – died October 27, 1439, in Neszmély, Hungary). He later became a very important ruler himself.
