Albert Speer (born July 29, 1934 – died September 15, 2017) was a German architect and city planner. He was known for designing many important buildings and city areas around the world. His father, also named Albert Speer, was an architect too. His grandfather, Albert Friedrich Speer, was also an architect, making it a family tradition!
Becoming an Architect and Planner
Albert Speer Jr. said that he chose to become an architect because he loved it, not because his father was one. He was especially interested in urban planning, which is about designing and organizing cities.
He won his first international award in 1964. After that, he opened his own company for architecture. He even worked on projects in Saudi Arabia. In 1977, he became a professor of urban planning at the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany. His company also opened an office in Shanghai, China, in 2001.
In 1984, he started a company called Büro Albert Speer & Partner in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He helped design some very famous projects:
- The Expo 2000 fair in Hanover, Germany.
- The Shanghai International Automobile City in China.
- The main design for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
Speer was also part of the team that helped Munich try to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. He also worked on plans for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
He passed away on September 15, 2017, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He was 83 years old.
His Family and Legacy
Albert Speer Jr. had a famous father, Albert Speer, who was a well-known figure during World War II. Albert Speer Jr. spent his life trying to show that he was different from his father. He was one of the few children of famous Nazi leaders who openly said that what their parents did was wrong.
He once said that his father was not very involved in his childhood. He also mentioned that Adolf Hitler seemed like "a nice uncle" to him when he was a child. However, Albert Speer Jr. did not hate his father. He thought his father was a "good architect" and very modern for his time.
