The Albertine owlet or Prigogine's owlet (Glaucidium albertinum) is a small type of owl. It belongs to the Strigidae family, which includes most owls. This little owl lives in the mountain forests of the Albertine Rift in Central Africa.

What Does the Albertine Owlet Look Like?
The Albertine owlet looks a lot like the African barred owlet (Glaucidium capense). It is a small owl with a large head. It does not have the "ear-tufts" that some owls have.

- Head: Its head has many small whitish spots.
- Upper Body: The top part of its body is a maroon-brown color. Its back and shoulders do not have stripes.
- Underparts: The chin, throat, and upper chest are maroon. They have wide, creamy stripes. The rest of its belly is off-white. It has dark chestnut spots, especially on its sides.
- Tail: The tail is brown with large white spots.
- Eyes: Its eyes are a pale yellow color.
- Size: This owl is about 20 cm (7.9 in) long. That's about the length of a ruler!
Where Does the Albertine Owlet Live?
The Albertine owlet is found in only a few places. These areas are in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and western Rwanda.
Specific Locations
- Itombwe Mountains: Two owls were found here.
- West of Lake Edward: Two more were found in forests here. This area is about 1,100 m (3,600 ft) high.
- Nyungwe Forest: One owl was found in this forest in Rwanda.
- Kahuzi-Biéga National Park: People have also seen this owl in this park in the DRC. This park is west of Lake Kivu.
What Kind of Home Does It Like?
The Albertine owlet lives in very open mountain forests. It likes areas with many clearings and thick plants growing on the ground. It probably lives at heights up to 2,500 m (8,200 ft).

Scientists don't know much about how the Albertine owlet behaves. It's a very secretive bird.
What Does It Eat?
We know a little about its diet from studying some specimens. The stomach of one owl had a beetle and a grasshopper inside. This tells us it eats insects.

The Albertine owlet is facing threats to its home. Its population is considered "Near Threatened" (NT) by the IUCN. This means it could become endangered if we don't protect it.
