Alberto Carlos Garzón Espinosa (born 9 October 1985) is a Spanish former politician and economist. He served as the Minister of Consumer Affairs in Spain from 2020 to 2023.
He has been a member of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) and United Left (Izquierda Unida, IU) since 2003. In 2011, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Spain. He is also a researcher at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville.

About Alberto Garzón
Early Life and Family
Alberto Garzón was born in Logroño, Spain. His father was a Geography and History teacher. His mother was a pharmacist.
When he was three years old, his family moved to Marchena. Later, in 1994, they moved to Rincón de la Victoria. Alberto went to elementary and secondary school there. He enjoyed playing football when he was young.
University Studies and Early Politics
Garzón first studied Business Administration at the University of Málaga. The next year, he switched to Economics. When he was 18, he joined the political group "United Left The Greens-Andalucía."
In 2004, he helped start a student group called "Students for a Critical Economy." This group wanted to discuss economics in new ways. They also took part in social movements. The group became very popular in student elections.
Later, Garzón earned a Master's degree in International Economy and Development. He studied at the Complutense University of Madrid. Here, he met José Luis Sampedro, an important economist who influenced his ideas.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 2011, Alberto Garzón was elected as a Deputy in the Spanish Parliament. He represented the Málaga region. At that time, he was the youngest member of the House of Deputies.
In 2013, he became a member of United Left's main committee. This committee helps lead the party.
Minister of Consumer Affairs
On 13 January 2020, Garzón was appointed Minister of Consumer Affairs. As Minister, his job was to protect the rights of consumers in Spain. This means making sure products are safe and fair for people to buy.
In 2021, he announced a plan to stop advertising certain unhealthy foods to children under 16. This ban would apply to TV, radio, online, movies, and newspapers. It included foods like candy, cookies, and sugary drinks.
In 2022, Garzón talked about his concerns regarding factory farming. He highlighted how it can harm the environment. He also spoke about the quality of meat produced this way. He suggested that traditional farming methods were better for the planet. His comments led to discussions about farming practices in Spain. A report also connected intensive pork farming to environmental problems in the country.
