About Alberto Garzón
His Early Life
Alberto Garzón was born in Logroño, Spain. His father was a geography and history teacher. His mother was a pharmacist. When he was three, his family moved to Marchena. Later, in 1994, they moved to Rincón de la Victoria. As a child, he enjoyed football.
His University Days
Garzón first studied business at the University of Málaga. However, he soon changed his major to Economics. When he was 18, he joined the United Left The Greens-Andalucía political group.
In 2004, he helped start a student group called "Students for a Critical Economy." This group wanted to improve how economics was taught. They also took part in social movements. This group later became part of "Critical Students," a union of many progressive student groups.
Garzón later earned a master's degree. He studied International Economy and Development at the Complutense University of Madrid.
Member of Parliament
In 2011, Garzón was elected to the Spanish Parliament. He represented the Málaga area for the United Left party. At that time, he was the youngest member of the House of Deputies. In 2013, he became a member of the United Left's main committee.
His Work as a Minister
Garzón became the Minister of Consumer Affairs on January 13, 2020. He held this position until November 21, 2023.
Protecting Young Consumers
In October 2021, Garzón announced a new rule. His ministry would ban ads for certain unhealthy foods aimed at children under 16. This ban would apply to TV, radio, online, movies, and newspapers. Foods like candy, energy bars, cookies, cake, juice, energy drinks, and ice cream were included. This rule started in 2022.
Views on Farming
In 2022, Garzón spoke about factory farming. He said it harms the environment and produces lower-quality meat for export. He believed traditional grazing was better for the planet. These comments caused some debate. The meat industry and other politicians disagreed with him.
Garzón continued to talk about pollution from factory farming. He also mentioned the problem of eating too much meat. Spain's livestock industry relies on selling meat to other countries. His comments led to strong reactions. A report even linked intensive pork farming to a major environmental problem in Spain. This problem caused many fish to die.
