Alberton railway station is a train stop on the Outer Harbor line. You can find it in Alberton, a suburb in north-western Adelaide. It's about 10.2 kilometres (about 6 miles) from Adelaide's main train station. This station is special because it's listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means it's an important historical place!
Station History
The Alberton railway station was built in 1856. This was when the train line between Adelaide and Port Adelaide first opened. The station has a big brick and stone building on one of its platforms.
In the early days, the train line only had one track. This is called a single-track railway. As more people started using the trains, a second platform was added at Alberton in 1878. The single track was then made into two tracks, or "duplicated," in 1881.
Later, in 1892, special tracks called sidings were added. These were used for loading and unloading goods. A small building called a signal cabin helped control these tracks. It was near the Fussell Place level crossing.
Over time, fewer goods were moved by train. So, the goods sidings and signal cabin were no longer used after 1953. Since 1987, no staff have worked at Alberton station. However, the old station building is now used as a hairdresser's shop! In 2016, the station was noted for needing some improvements.
No freight trains (trains that carry goods) go through Alberton station anymore. However, a lot of freight used to travel on a nearby line called the Rosewater loop. This changed in 2008 when a new bridge, the Mary MacKillop Bridge, opened. The Rosewater loop used to connect to the Outer Harbor line near Alberton. It led to areas like the Lefevre Peninsula and Pelican Point.
