Llapida albiones
The Nicer Clutosi stele inscription.

The Albiones were an ancient group of people who lived on the northern coast of what is now Spain. They were part of the Gallaeci people, who lived in the western parts of Asturias and eastern Galicia. We know about them because a famous Roman writer named Pliny the Elder mentioned them. Pliny the Elder was a Roman author, naturalist, and philosopher who wrote a huge encyclopedia called Natural History.

We also found out about the Albiones from a special stone called the "stele of Nicer Clutosi." A stele is like an ancient stone monument or slab, often used as a tombstone. This stele was found near a place called Vegadeo. It has an old inscription that tells us more about these people.

What Does the Stele Say?

The inscription on the stele of Nicer Clutosi says:

☧ NICER CLUTOSI (filius) C(astello) CARIACA PRINCIPIS ALBIONUM AN(norum) LXXV HI(c) S(itus) EST

This can be translated to mean: "Nicer, son of Clutoso from the house of Cariaca, prince of the Albions, died at 75 years old, lies here." This tells us that Nicer was an important leader, or "prince," among the Albiones. It also gives us a clue about their social structure and how they honored their leaders.

Britons in the Albiones' Land

Long after the Roman Empire, a group of people from Britain (who we call Britons) came and settled in the same area where the Albiones once lived. Because of these Britons, the region eventually got the name Britonia or Bretoña.

We know about this from old church records, which mention a "British church" (Britonensis ecclesia) and a special area for a bishop called the sedes Britonarum, meaning "seat of the Britons." This shows how different groups of people moved and settled, leaving their mark on the names and history of places. You can learn more about this in the History of Galicia.
