Villages and History
Albrandswaard is made up of two main villages: Poortugaal in the west and Rhoon in the east. These two villages used to be separate municipalities until 1985. That's when they joined together to form the municipality of Albrandswaard.
The name "Albrandswaard" comes from an older municipality called Albrandswaard en Kijvelanden. This older area existed until 1842. It then became part of Poortugaal. Albrandswaard itself is a "polder," which is a piece of land that used to be underwater but was drained. It sits between Rhoon and Poortugaal.
Getting Around Albrandswaard
Both Poortugaal and Rhoon have their own metro stations. These stations are part of the Rotterdam Metro line D. The metro connects the villages to the big city of Rotterdam in the east. From Rotterdam, you can reach the main railway network.
The metro also connects Albrandswaard to other towns like Hoogvliet and Spijkenisse in the west. This makes it easy for people living in Albrandswaard to travel for school, work, or fun.
