History of the Alcazar Theatre

From Temple to Theatre

The building that is now the Alcazar Theatre was first built in 1917. It cost $150,000 to build. It was designed by an architect named T. Patterson Ross. The building was made to look like an Islamic temple, in a style called Exotic Revival.

When it first opened, a magazine called Architect and Engineer said it looked like the famous Alhambra palace. The Alhambra is a beautiful old building in Spain known for its amazing Arabian art. This building was used as a special meeting place for a group called the Shriners until 1970.

A New Life for the Theatre

Before this building became the Alcazar Theatre, there were two other theatres in San Francisco with the same name. The last one, the Alcazar Theatre on O'Farrell Street, closed down on December 31, 1961. It was later torn down.

In 1976, the old Shriner's Temple on Geary Street was turned into a theatre. It then took on the name Alcazar Theatre.

Renovations and Landmark Status

In 1982, the inside of the theatre was completely redone. It reopened its doors in 1993, ready for new shows. The Alcazar Theatre is located near Union Square, in an area of the city famous for its theatres.

Because of its history and unique design, the Alcazar Theatre was named a San Francisco Designated Landmark in 1989. This means it's an important building that the city wants to protect.
