The Alcoy Cemetery (also known as Cementerio de San Antonio Abad) is a special cemetery located in Alcoy, Spain. It was built in 1885.
This 19th-century cemetery is considered one of the most interesting in the Valencian Community. It stands out because of its unique buildings and beautiful sculptures. Many of these artworks show the Valencian Art Nouveau style. Art Nouveau was a popular art style around the late 1800s and early 1900s. It used flowing lines and natural shapes. The Alcoy Cemetery is even part of the European Cemeteries Route. This is a special cultural path set up by the Council of Europe.
Exploring Alcoy Cemetery's Art
The Alcoy Cemetery is like an open-air museum. It features many impressive tombs and monuments. These large family tombs are often called "pantheons." They show different art styles from the past.
Here are some of the most important works you can find:
- Pantheon of Agustín Gisbert: This pantheon was created in 1903. It is a great example of the Art Nouveau style. Many artists worked on it. Vicente Pascual Pastor designed it. José Cort Merita was the engineer. Fernando Cabrera Cantó painted parts of it. Lorenzo Ridaura Gosálbez created the sculptures.
- Pantheon Anselmo Aracil: Also from 1903, this pantheon shows a historic eclectic style. This means it mixes different historical art styles. Vicente Pascual Pastor designed it. A. Clarí made the sculpture. Eudaldo Ramón Amigó created the beautiful stained glass windows.
- Pantheon Vilaplana Gisbert: Designed by Timoteo Briet Montaud in 1910, this pantheon is another excellent example of the Art Nouveau style.
- Pantheon of Salvador García Botí (Escaló): This Art Nouveau pantheon was made in 1911. Vicente Pascual Pastor designed it. Eugenio Carbonell was the sculptor.
- Pantheon Enrique Carbonell: Completed in 1925, this is another important Art Nouveau work. Vicente Pascual Pastor did the design. Lorenzo Ridaura Gosálbez created the reliefs and sculpture. Tomás Ferrándiz made the crypt reliefs.
- Pantheon Enrique Hernández: This pantheon was created in 1931. Both the design and sculpture were done by Lorenzo Ridaura Gosálbez. It also features the Art Nouveau style.
- Pantheon Erum-Pascual: This is a more modern work from 2009. It was designed by Cheluca Sala Palau and Mauro Matarredona. It is made with Corten iron, which gives it a unique look.
