History of Alden
For thousands of years, the land that is now Kansas was home to Native American tribes. In 1803, the United States gained most of this land through the Louisiana Purchase. This was a huge land deal with France.
Kansas became a U.S. territory in 1854. It officially joined the United States as the 34th state in 1861. Rice County was created in 1867.
Alden itself was founded in 1872. It was an important stop along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway line. The city was named after Alden Speare, who worked for the railroad. The first post office in Alden opened its doors in 1882.
