Alder is a small community in Madison County, Montana, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. In 2020, 86 people lived there.
The community gets its name from Alder Creek. This creek was named by Henry Edgar in 1863. It was the place where the second biggest gold discovery in Montana happened!

Where is Alder Located?
Alder is found in the western part of Madison County, in a place called the Ruby Valley. Alder Creek flows into this valley from the east.
Montana Highway 287 runs through Alder. This highway can take you about 9 miles (14 km) east to Virginia City, which is the main town of the county. If you go about 10 miles (16 km) northwest, you'll reach Sheridan. The Ruby River flows along the western side of Alder. About 7 miles (11 km) south of Alder is the Ruby River Reservoir, a large body of water.
The Alder CDP covers a total area of about 2.01 square miles (5.20 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Alder has a climate with big temperature changes throughout the year. Summers are warm or hot, and sometimes humid. Winters are cold, and can be very cold. This type of weather is called a humid continental climate.
