Alejandro Gorostiaga Orrego (born May 12, 1840 – died October 30, 1912) was an important Chilean military officer. He was born in La Serena, Chile. Alejandro Gorostiaga came from a Basque family background.

He joined the Escuela Militar de Chile, which is a military school, in 1857. He served in the military until he retired in 1878.

Joining the War of the Pacific

In 1879, Colonel Gorostiaga returned to the Chilean Army. This was because of the War of the Pacific. This big conflict was fought between Chile, Peru, and Bolivia.

In May of that year, Alejandro Gorostiaga was given an important role. He was named the leader, or commandant, of a group called the civic battalion Coquimbo Nº1.

Key Battles and Victories

Gorostiaga took part in several important battles during the war. One of these was the Battle of Pisagua.

The Battle of Huamachuco

His most famous and important contribution was in the Battle of Huamachuco. This battle happened on July 10, 1883. In this fight, the Chilean forces, led in part by Gorostiaga, defeated the Peruvian army. The Peruvian forces were led by Andrés Cáceres. This victory was a major turning point in the war.

Later Life

Alejandro Gorostiaga passed away in 1912. He died in Santiago, the capital city of Chile.
