Alerce Andino National Park is a special protected area in Chile. It is located in the Andes mountains, in the Los Lagos Region. This park is a huge natural space, covering about 393 square kilometers (that's about 152 square miles!).
The park has natural borders. To its east and south, it is next to the Reloncaví Estuary. To the west, it is near the Reloncaví Sound. Chapo Lake is located to the north of the park. Inside the park, you can find about 50 different lakes and natural ponds.
The park is managed by an organization called Corporación Nacional Forestal, also known as CONAF. They help protect this amazing place.
Amazing Plants of Alerce Andino
The most famous plants in Alerce Andino National Park are the Alerce trees. Their scientific name is Fitzroya cupressoides. These trees are very old and tall. They are the main reason this park was created!
You can find large areas of Alerce forests here. Some parts have only Alerce trees, while others have a mix of different tree types. These forests cover about 200 square kilometers (about 77 square miles) of the park.
Cool Animals of Alerce Andino
Alerce Andino National Park is home to many interesting animals. It provides a safe place for them to live.
Two important animals that live here are the pudú and the monito del monte.
- The pudú is the smallest type of deer in the world. It's super cute!
- The monito del monte is a tiny marsupial. It looks a bit like a mouse but is related to kangaroos and koalas.
