History of Alex
The town of Alex gets its name from an early settler. His name was William Vinson Alexander. His wife, Martha, became the first postmistress. This happened when a post office opened in Alexander's store in December 1885. William Alexander also started the First State Bank in 1907.
A Big Storm in Alex
On July 7, 1906, a strong tornado hit Alex. It almost destroyed the whole town. Most of the business area had to be rebuilt. About a year later, new stores opened. These included a drug store and several general stores.
Newspaper and Town Growth
The town also had its own newspaper. It was called the Alex Tribune. It started in 1907 and ran until the 1940s. Alex officially became a town in 1910.
