Alexander C. Albritton (born February 12, 1892 – died February 3, 1940) was a talented American baseball pitcher. He played in the Negro Leagues, which were important baseball leagues for African American players before major league baseball was integrated. Alex played for several teams between 1918 and 1925.
Early Life of Alex Albritton
Alex Albritton was born in Live Oak, Florida. His birthday was February 12, either in 1892 or 1894. His parents were D. W. and Charlotte Albritton.
After the year 1900, his family moved to Ben Hill County, Georgia. Alex later married a woman named Marie. They lived in both Florida and Philadelphia before he started his professional baseball journey.
Alex Albritton's Baseball Career
Alex Albritton started his baseball career in 1918. He played at least one game for the Bacharach Giants. He came in as a relief pitcher, helping his team from the bullpen.
In 1920, Albritton played with the Pittsburgh Colored Stars. This team was from Buffalo. In April 1921, he joined the Washington Braves. He played with them until at least mid-May. By June 1921, he was playing for the Hilldale Club.
Albritton then pitched for the Baltimore Black Sox in 1922. He stayed with them when they joined the Eastern Colored League in 1923. Later in May 1923, he began pitching for the Washington Potomacs. He continued with this team, which later played in Wilmington, Delaware, until 1925. In 1924, he also pitched for the Brooklyn Cuban Giants.
By 1925, Alex Albritton was known as a "war horse." This nickname meant he was a very tough and reliable pitcher. He was willing to pitch as many as four times in a single week.
Later Life and Passing
Alex Albritton passed away in 1940 at a hospital in Philadelphia. His death certificate states he was buried at Eden Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Collingdale, Pennsylvania. However, officials at the cemetery could not find records of his burial there.
