Alejandro Barrett (born March 6, 1994) is an American professional football player. He plays as a defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the pros, he played college football at San Diego State University.

Growing Up and High School Football

Alex Barrett grew up in Mesa, Arizona. He played high school football at Desert Ridge High School. He was so good that he earned "First-team All-State" honors twice. This means he was one of the best players in the entire state! Alex also played track and field in high school.

College Football Journey

Alex played for the San Diego State Aztecs from 2013 to 2016. In 2012, he was "redshirted." This means he practiced with the team but didn't play in games. It helped him get ready for future seasons.

Key College Achievements

  • 2013: He played in 12 games. He made 8 solo tackles and 3 sacks.
  • 2014: He started all 10 games he played. He earned "Honorable Mention All-Mountain West" honors.
  • 2015: He started all 14 games. He was named "First-team All-Mountain West." He also made 5.5 sacks and had 2 interceptions.
  • 2016: He started all 14 games again. He was named "First-team All-Mountain West" for the second time! This made him the first defensive lineman from San Diego State to get this honor more than once. He was also a team captain.

Overall, Alex played in 50 college games, starting 38 of them. He made 19 sacks, which was tied for the fourth most in his school's history.

Playing Professional Football

After college, Alex was evaluated by NFL teams. He was rated as one of the top defensive ends in the 2017 NFL draft.

Starting with the Detroit Lions

Alex signed with the Detroit Lions in 2017. He was an undrafted free agent, meaning no team picked him in the draft. He spent time on the team's practice squad, which is like a training team. He was with the Lions until 2018.

Playing for the San Diego Fleet

In 2018, Alex joined the San Diego Fleet. This team was part of a new league called the Alliance of American Football (AAF). He played in 8 games and made 15 tackles and 2 sacks before the league stopped playing.

Time with the Oakland Raiders

After the AAF closed, Alex signed with the Oakland Raiders in 2019. He was later released by the team.

Joining the San Francisco 49ers

Alex joined the San Francisco 49ers practice squad in November 2019. Since then, he has been with the 49ers. He has moved between the practice squad and the main team roster many times. This shows how hard he works to stay in the NFL! He continues to be a part of the 49ers team.
