About His Life
Early Years
Alexander Charles Hamilton was born on July 3, 1840. His father was William Hamilton, a well-known geologist. A geologist is a scientist who studies the Earth's rocks and history. His father was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Newport on the Isle of Wight. Alexander's mother was Margaret Frances Florence Dillon. He had a brother named Archibald William Hamilton, whose son Robert would later become the 11th Lord Belhaven and Stenton.
His Career
Alexander Hamilton had a long and interesting career. He became a Colonel in the Royal Engineers. This is a special part of the British Army that deals with engineering tasks, like building bridges or defenses. He fought in the Zulu War in 1879, which was a conflict in Southern Africa.
From 1888 to 1902, he was a Brigadier in the Surrey Volunteer Infantry Brigade. He received the Territorial Decoration for his service. He was also made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, which means he was recognized for his knowledge and contributions to geography.
In 1893, he became the 10th Lord Belhaven and Stenton. This was a noble title passed down through his family. The House of Lords officially confirmed his title in 1894. He also served as a Justice of the Peace, which is a local judge, and a Deputy Lieutenant for Lanarkshire in Scotland. From 1900 until he passed away in 1920, he served as a Scottish Representative Peer in the House of Lords.
Family Life
On July 7, 1880, Alexander Hamilton married Georgiana Katharine Richmond. They had one child together:
- Ralph Gerard Alexander Hamilton (1883–1918). Sadly, Ralph was killed in 1918 during a major battle called the Battle of Amiens during World War I. He had married Lady Grizel Winifred Louisa Cochrane.
Lord Belhaven and Stenton passed away at his home, Wishaw House, on October 31, 1920. Because his son Ralph had died before him and did not have any children, his nephew Robert became the next Lord Belhaven and Stenton. Alexander's wife, Georgiana, passed away in 1932.
