Sir Alexander Lindsay (died 1308) was an important Scottish noble. He was also known as Alexander de Lindsay. He held lands like Barnweill, Byres, and Crawford.
Alexander was the oldest son of Sir David Lindsay of Barnweill and Margaret de Lindsay.
Early Life and Loyalty
Alexander promised his loyalty to King Edward I of England on July 28, 1296. This happened in Berwick.
In July 1297, Alexander and other Scottish leaders surrendered at Irvine. This event is known as the Capitulation of Irvine.
Wars for Independence
Alexander fought with the English army at the Battle of Falkirk on July 22, 1298. The English army won this battle against the Scots. Because of his help, he was given back some lands in Crawford. These lands had once belonged to his family.
Later, Alexander changed sides and supported Scottish independence. In 1305, he was told to leave Scotland for six months. This was because he had supported leaders like Sir William Wallace and Sir Andrew Moray. He also supported Robert de Brus, who later became King Robert the Bruce.
Capture and Later Years
In September 1306, Alexander was captured when Kildrummy Castle fell. He was taken to England and held as a prisoner.
In 1308, Alexander was one of the leaders of the Scottish army. They fought in the area of Galloway. He was called to the Scottish parliament in 1309. However, it seems he had already passed away in 1308.
