Alexander Carragh MacDonnell, also spelled MacDonald, was an important leader from Scotland. He was the 5th Lord of Dunnyveg, a title that meant he was a powerful chief in his area. He lived from around 1480 to 1538.
Who Was Alexander Carragh MacDonnell?
Alexander Carragh MacDonnell was the son of John Cathanach MacDonald, 4th of Dunnyveg and Cecillia Savage. His mother was the daughter of the Lord of the Ardes.
Sadly, in 1499, Alexander's father and brothers died in a place called Boroughmuir (which is now Burgh Muir). After this, Alexander had to leave Scotland and went to Ireland.
In 1532, Alexander led a group of fierce warriors called gallowglass. These were a type of soldier from Scotland and Ireland. He and his gallowglass fought against the English in Ireland.
Alexander died in 1538 while he was visiting King James V of Scotland in Stirling. He was buried there.

Alexander Carragh MacDonnell was married to Catherine. She was the daughter of John Macdonald of Ardnamurchan and Helen Campbell. Together, Alexander and Catherine had many children:

- James MacDonald, 6th of Dunnyveg, who became the 6th Lord of Dunnyveg. He married a woman named Agnes. James died in May 1565 while he was held in Castle Crocke in Ireland.
- Angus MacDonnell, who died during the battle of Glentasie on May 2, 1565.
- Colla MacDonnell, who married Evelyn MacQuillan. He died in 1558 at Kinbane Castle.
- Sorley Boy MacDonnell, who died in 1590 at Dunanynie Castle near Ballycastle.
