James MacDonald (Scottish Gaelic: Séamus Mac Dhòmhnaill), also known as McDonnell, was an important Scottish-Gaelic leader. He was the 6th Chief of the Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg. He lived a long time ago, in the 1500s, and passed away in 1565.

Who Was James MacDonald?
James MacDonald was the son of Alexander MacDonald. His father was a powerful lord who ruled over the Scottish islands of Islay and Kintyre. James's mother was Catherine MacDonald.
A Brother's Freedom
In 1551, James helped his brother, Sorley Boy MacDonnell, gain his freedom. Sorley Boy had been captured. James arranged for his release by trading a prisoner he held, named George Bustsyde. This trade happened after a battle on Rathlin Island.
The Battle of Glentasie
On May 2, 1565, James MacDonald and his brother Sorley Boy faced a big challenge. They were captured during the Battle of Glentasie. Their captor was Shane O'Neill, an Irish chieftain.
Imprisonment and Death
After being captured, James was held at Castle Crocke. This castle was near a place called Strathbane. Sadly, James had been badly hurt during the battle. He passed away from his wounds while he was still a prisoner. At court, James was also known as "James MacConnel."
James MacDonald's Family
James MacDonald was married to Agnes. She was the daughter of Colin Campbell, 3rd Earl of Argyll. Together, James and Agnes had several children.

- Archibald MacDonald, 7th of Dunnyveg: He became the 7th Chief after his father. He passed away in 1569.
- Angus MacDonald, 8th of Dunnyveg: He became the 8th Chief. He passed away around 1613.
- Ranald MacDonald of Smerby: He married a daughter of the Bannatyne of Kames family. He passed away in 1616.
- Coll MacDonald: He passed away at Eilean Mor Cormac.
- Donald Gorm MacDonald of Carey: He was killed in Ireland during the Battle of Ardnaree in 1586.
- Alexander Carragh MacDonald of Glenarm: He was also killed during the Battle of Ardnaree in Ireland in 1586.
- Finola MacDonald: Her full name was Fionnghuala MacDonald. She married Sir Hugh O'Donnell, a very important Irish leader. Through her, she became the mother of famous figures like Red Hugh O'Donnell and Rory O'Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell. Finola passed away around 1608.
