Alexander William Sowinski (born October 11, 1991) is a Canadian musician. He is a producer and the drummer for the instrumental band BADBADNOTGOOD. With his band, he has released five studio albums. He is well-known for his amazing jazz drumming skills.

Life and Career of Alex Sowinski

Alexander William Sowinski was born on October 11, 1991. He grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. He went to Lorne Park Secondary School there. Later, he moved to Toronto and attended Humberside Collegiate Institute. He is of Polish background.

How BADBADNOTGOOD Started

Sowinski studied jazz music at Humber College. There, he met his future bandmates, Chester Hansen and Matthew Tavares. Before BADBADNOTGOOD, Sowinski played in a band with musician Tommy Paxton-Beesley, also known as River Tiber.

BADBADNOTGOOD formed in 2010. They became very popular in 2011. This happened after they posted jazz versions of songs by the group Odd Future online. They released their first album in the fall of 2011. Sowinski plays the drums and also acts as the band's MC (Master of Ceremonies) during their shows. As the band became more popular, Sowinski left Humber College.

Music Achievements and Collaborations

As of 2021, Sowinski has released six full-length albums with BADBADNOTGOOD. This includes an album they made with Ghostface Killah. Their albums have been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize twice.

With his band, Sowinski has also produced many hip hop, R&B, and electronic music songs. These include tracks for famous artists like Kendrick Lamar, Daniel Caesar, and Kali Uchis. For the past ten years, Sowinski has also worked as a session musician and songwriter. He has worked with producers and musicians such as Kaytranada, Frank Dukes, and Charlotte Day Wilson.

Other Projects

In 2018, Alex Sowinski helped start a design group in Toronto called Arrangement Studio. When it launched, Sowinski released some experimental ambient music. He released it under the name Arrangement, titled Vol. 1.. He has released more songs since then.

He also produced drum beats for other musicians to use. This was part of another group called Group Climate. Sowinski started being a DJ in 2019. He has created many experimental DJ mixes for Arrangement Studio. He has also been a co-presenter on Worldwide FM.

In 2019, Sowinski helped create the music for a Canadian movie. It was an indie thriller called Disappearance at Clifton Hill. He worked on this with his bandmate Leland Whitty.

Alex Sowinski's Drum Equipment

Sowinski plays a Ludwig Maple four-piece drum kit. It usually includes a 14-inch tom drum, an 18-inch floor tom, and a 26-inch kick drum. He also uses a Roland SPDS sampler. In the early 2010s, he often played without a rack tom. He would mount his SPDS on top of the kick drum. He uses cymbals from Istanbul and vintage Zildjian. He plays with Headhunter drumsticks.
