About Matthew Tavares
Early Life and Band Beginnings
Matthew Adam Tavares was born on September 15, 1990. He grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. He went to Mentor College, a local school there. Later, he studied jazz music at Humber College. This is where he met drummer Alexander Sowinski and bassist Chester Hansen.
In 2010, these three friends formed the band BADBADNOTGOOD. The band became very popular online in 2011. They posted jazz versions of songs by the group Odd Future. Their first album came out that fall. Matthew left college in February 2012 to focus on the band.
Music with BADBADNOTGOOD
With BADBADNOTGOOD (BBNG), Matthew Tavares released five full-length albums. One of these was a special album with the rapper Ghostface Killah. The band was also nominated twice for the Polaris Music Prize, a big award for Canadian music.
After their album IV came out in 2016, Matthew stopped touring as much with the band. He wanted to focus on producing music and working on his own solo project, Matty. However, he still played with BBNG sometimes. He performed at places like Massey Hall in 2017 and at a Louis Vuitton fashion show in Tokyo in 2018.
Solo Music and Collaborations
Matthew Tavares has worked as a songwriter and music producer throughout his career. He often produced songs with BBNG and with producer Frank Dukes. Early on, he helped create tracks for groups like Wu-Tang Clan and artist Daniel Caesar. Later, he worked on songs for Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Post Malone, and Rosalía.
In 2018, Tavares released his first solo album, Déjàvu. He used the name Matty for this project. The other members of BBNG played as his backing band on the album. That same year, he also created the music for a CBC video game docuseries called The Artists.
After releasing several singles, Tavares started using his full name for some of his solo work. In October 2019, he announced he was leaving BBNG. In 2020, he released three full solo albums. He also put out two jazz albums with his former BBNG bandmate Leland Whitty. In 2020, he was nominated for a Latin Grammy for his work on the Rosalía song "Dolerme".
Matthew Tavares lives in Toronto, Canada.
