Alexander Stevenson (born in 1726, died in 1791) was an important Scottish doctor from the 1700s. He helped start a famous group called the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783. He was also chosen twice to be the leader (President) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

About His Life

Early Years and Education

Alexander Stevenson was born in Edinburgh around 1725 or 1726. His father, Dr. John Stevenson, was also a doctor. Some records suggest he might have been born in Dolgain in Ayrshire.

He went to Glasgow University to study medicine. He earned his special doctor's degree (MD) in 1746. After finishing his studies, he started his own medical practice in Glasgow.

Professor and Famous Meetings

From 1766 to 1789, Alexander Stevenson was also a Professor of Medicine at Glasgow University. He took over this important job from Professor Joseph Black.

On October 29, 1773, he had breakfast with two very famous people: James Boswell and Dr. Samuel Johnson. This happened during their well-known trip around Scotland. Other professors, Reid and Anderson, were also there.

Later Life and Death

In his later years, Dr. Stevenson lived in a house on the east side of Virginia Street in Glasgow. He passed away in Glasgow on May 29, 1791.

His Family

Alexander Stevenson was married to a woman named Jean Pickegg.

His sister, Juliana Stevenson, was the mother of Thomas Charles Hope. Thomas Charles Hope later took over Alexander Stevenson's job as Professor of Medicine when Stevenson retired in 1789.
