Music Career Journey
2004–2014: Early Steps and First Music
In 2004, Alex was one of 16 young people on the TV show Endurance. This was a reality show for kids on Discovery Kids. She teamed up with Bjorn Leum, and they finished seventh in the competition.
Soon after, a music executive's assistant found Alex's profile online. This led her to move to New York City. She signed a music contract with Def Jam Recordings. She also signed a publishing contract with Sony Music. Later, she moved to Los Angeles, California.
Alex released her first song, "Body to Body," on November 7, 2011. She wrote the lyrics herself. She performed the song live for the first time at an event in Dallas, Texas.
Her first collection of songs, called an extended play (EP), was Letters to My Ex. It came out on August 31, 2012. Even though it didn't appear on music charts, many online music blogs liked it. Two songs from the EP, "Soldier" and "My Ex," were released before the EP itself.
Alex had planned to release another EP called Chik Muzik in 2013. However, it was never released. After a break, she released another song, "Want Me Some U," on February 14, 2014.
2015–2017: Joining K-Pop Group Rania
In 2015, a music company called DR Music announced that the K-Pop group Rania would be making a comeback. Alex was announced as a new member on November 4, 2015. This was exciting because she was the first American K-Pop idol.
Rania released their EP, Demonstrate, on November 4, 2015. At first, Alex was not in the music video for the main song. This was because of issues with her visa. The music video was later re-released with Alex included. The group performed the song live with Alex for the first time on November 14, 2015.
In 2016, DR Music tried to raise money for a new sub-unit called Hex. This group would include Alex and another member, Hyeme. They also planned a new Rania EP. However, the fundraising was stopped. This happened after three original members left Rania. Alex then became the leader of the group.
The group was renamed BP Rania. They released their EP, Start a Fire, on December 29, 2016. Alex was later absent from some performances for the song "Make Me Ah." This was because she had an acting opportunity. She played a character named Britt in the movie Bobbi Kristina, which came out on October 8, 2017.
On August 19, 2017, DR Music announced that Alex was leaving the group.
2017–Present: Solo Music and Writing
After leaving BP Rania, Alex continued to make music on her own. On December 9, 2017, she announced a new song called "East West." This song was originally planned for the Hex sub-unit. It was released on March 19, 2018. She then released another song, "Gretchen Wieners," on June 24, 2018.
Alex is currently writing a book about her experiences in the South Korean music industry.
