Alexandrine Petronella Francina Tinne (born October 17, 1835 – died August 1, 1869) was a brave Dutch explorer. She used her large family wealth to travel and learn more about Africa. Her father passed away when she was ten years old. This made her one of the richest people in the Netherlands.
Alexandrine Tinne was known for being very clever. She could speak several languages. She was also a skilled horse rider. People described her as brave and determined.
In 1863, Alexandrine began an important journey. She traveled down the Nile River with her mother and several scientists. During this trip, she collected a lot of valuable scientific information. Sadly, her mother and two of the scientists passed away during this difficult journey.
Later, Alexandrine planned another big trip. She wanted to cross the vast Sahara desert. For this journey, she brought two large iron tanks filled with water. During her travels, she was attacked by a group of people. They believed her water tanks contained gold. Alexandrine was injured in the attack. The attackers then left, and she died alone in the desert.
A church was built in her memory in her hometown, The Hague. Sadly, this church was destroyed by bombs during World War I.
