Alexis Galanos (Greek: Αλέξης Γαλανός, born August 30, 1940 – died July 15, 2019) was an important Greek Cypriot politician. He was the President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus from 1991 to 1996. This role is similar to being the speaker of a country's main law-making body. He studied Economics at King's College, Cambridge and Law at Inner Temple.

Alexis Galanos's Political Journey
Alexis Galanos was one of the people who helped create the Democratic Party (DIKO). He held many important jobs within this party. From 1989 to 1990, he was the party's Secretary General. This meant he was in charge of the party's daily operations. After that, from 1990 to 1996, he was the Vice-President.
Serving in Parliament
Alexis Galanos was an elected member of the House of Representatives from 1976 until 1999. This is like being a member of parliament, helping to make laws for the country. In 1991, the majority of the members of the House of Representatives chose him to be their President. This was a very important leadership role.
In 1998, he decided to leave the DIKO party. He did not agree with a decision made by Spyros Kyprianou about who to support in the 1998 presidential election. In 1999, he also resigned from his position in the House of Representatives.
Starting a New Party
In 1998, Alexis Galanos started a new political party called the Eurodemocratic Renewal Party (KEA). He was the first president of this new party. He also ran for president in the 1998 elections, getting 16,003 votes. In the 2003 presidential election, he supported Tassos Papadopoulos. He also tried to get elected to the European Parliament in 2004 with DIKO, but he was not successful.
Mayor of Famagusta
At the time of his death, Alexis Galanos was the mayor-in-exile of the city of Famagusta. He was chosen for this role on December 17, 2006. Being a "mayor-in-exile" means he was still considered the mayor even though the city was not under the control of the Cypriot government.
Role at the Bank of Cyprus
Alexis Galanos was considered for a top leadership role at the Bank of Cyprus. The Central Bank of Cyprus suggested him to be the Chairman of the Board. However, he was not able to take on this role due to certain rules.
