Alexis Wawanoloath, born on July 15, 1982, is a lawyer who works to protect the rights of Indigenous peoples. He also used to be a politician in Canada. He was a member of the National Assembly of Quebec, which is like the provincial parliament, for the area called Abitibi-Est. Alexis is a member of the Abenaki First Nation.

Who is Alexis Wawanoloath?
Alexis Wawanoloath was born in Val-d'Or, Quebec. His mother is Christine Sioui-Wawanoloath. He is also a descendant of a famous Abenaki chief named Gray Lock.
Early Life and Education
Alexis studied at the Cégep de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Before becoming a politician, he worked in different jobs. He was a social work technician and an educator at a daycare. He also hosted activities for young Indigenous people in Val-d'Or.
He was very involved in his community. He was the president of the youth council for Aboriginal peoples. He also helped manage the youth forum in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
Becoming a Politician
In 2007, Alexis Wawanoloath made history. He was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec. This made him the first Indigenous person elected there since Ludger Bastien. He won against Pierre Corbeil in the 2007 elections.
Alexis represented the Parti Québécois political party. The leader of his party, André Boisclair, chose him to be the party's spokesperson for youth issues. This role is called a "critic." He ran for election again in 2008 but was not re-elected.
Life After Politics
Even after his time in the National Assembly, Alexis continued to serve his community. On December 1, 2013, he was elected as a councillor for the Abenakis of Odanak council.
He also went back to school to study law at the Université de Sherbrooke. In June 2021, he became a lawyer. He specializes in the rights of Indigenous peoples. He works at a law firm called Neashish & Champoux.
Alexis also teaches about Indigenous peoples' law at Laval University. He is interested in communications too. He contributes to TV shows like Noovo Le Fil and the Debaters of Noovo. He also co-hosts a weekly radio show called Kwé-Bonjour on Canal M.
