Alfambra's Ancient Past
People have lived in Alfambra and the areas around it for a very long time. We know this because archaeologists have found old items from the Bronze Age. These items were discovered in places like Peña Dorada and El Castillo.
How Alfambra Got Its Name
Many people believe that Alfambra truly started to grow during the time of Muslim rule in Spain. In fact, the name Alfambra comes from an old Muslim word: al-hamra. This means "the red town." It was called this because of the deep red clay found in the ground where the town is built.
The Old Castle of Alfambra
During the Muslim period, there was an important castle in Alfambra. It was part of the Razin domain Banu. Some historians say it was the most important castle in Southern Aragon. Today, not much of the original castle remains. However, exciting discoveries from digs at the castle site can be seen in the local museum.
Changes Through the Centuries
In 1169, King Alfonso II took control of Alfambra. He gave the town special rights in 1174. Then, he handed it over to a new group called the Military Order of the Holy Redeemer. This group was also known as Montegaudio.
Later, from 1196 until it was no longer active, Alfambra became a base for the famous Knights Templar. These were a powerful group of warrior monks.
Between 1488 and 1495, Alfambra was part of the Teruel region called a sobrecullida. After that, it was linked to Teruel in different ways. It was part of the "path of Teruel" in 1646 and then the "district of Teruel" from 1711 to 1833.
