Alfonso Barrantes Lingán (born November 27, 1927, died December 2, 2000) was an important Peruvian politician. He was the Mayor of Lima, the capital city of Peru, from 1984 to 1986. He also tried to become President of Peru twice.

Alfonso Barrantes' Early Life and Studies
Alfonso Barrantes was born in 1927 in a place called San Miguel Province in Cajamarca, Peru. He grew up with his mother in the Lima Province of San Miguel.
He went to the National University of San Marcos to study law. While there, he became very active in student politics. He even became the president of the Student Association.
His Political Career
Alfonso Barrantes became a well-known politician in Peru. He was part of the United Left Party.
Mayor of Lima
From 1984 to 1986, Alfonso Barrantes served as the mayor of Lima. During his time as mayor, people sometimes called him El Frejolito, which means "Little Bean."
He was especially known for a special program he started. This program made sure that every child in Lima received a daily glass of milk. This important program is still helping children today! His assistant mayor was Henry Pease.
Running for President
Alfonso Barrantes wanted to become the President of Peru. He ran for president in the 1985 election. He came in second place in the first round of voting.
However, he decided to step out of the race before the final vote. Because of this, Alan García became the president.
He tried again to become president in the 1990 election. This time, he finished in fifth place. Alberto Fujimori was elected president in that election.
Later Life and Passing
Alfonso Barrantes passed away in December 2000. He was 73 years old when he died in Havana, Cuba. He was buried in a cemetery in Lima, Peru.
