Alfonso Pérez Muñoz (born on September 26, 1972), often called just Alfonso, is a famous Spanish former footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a forward player who scored goals.

Alfonso played for big clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. Even though he wasn't very tall, he was great at heading the ball. He played in 307 La Liga games, which is Spain's top football league. He scored 84 goals in these games for three different teams, including two times with Real Betis.

He also played for the Spanish national team almost 40 times. He represented Spain in one World Cup and two European Championships.

Alfonso's Club Journey

Alfonso was born in Getafe, a town near Madrid, Spain. He started his professional football career very young.

Early Days at Real Madrid

In 1991, when he was just 18, Alfonso joined Real Madrid. He didn't always start games, often playing as a backup. However, he helped Real Madrid win the national championship in 1995.

Shining at Real Betis

In 1995, Alfonso moved to Real Betis. This is where he really showed his talent. In his second year, he scored 25 goals in La Liga. This was a record for the club at the time. He and his teammate Pier scored a lot of goals together. They helped Real Betis finish fourth in the league that year.

Time at Barcelona and Marseille

Alfonso joined Barcelona in 2000. It was a tough time for him there. He only scored two goals in his first year. He even went on loan to a French team, Marseille, in 2002.

Return to Real Betis and Retirement

After his time at Barcelona, Alfonso returned to his former club, Betis. He played there for two more seasons. He faced some injuries and didn't play as well as before. He retired from football in June 2005. By then, he had scored over 100 official goals in his career. After retiring, he joined Real Madrid's team for former players.

Playing for Spain

Alfonso played 38 games for the Spanish national team. His first game was a friendly match against England in 1992.

Memorable Goals for Spain

He scored 11 goals for his country. One of his most famous goals was against Yugoslavia in UEFA Euro 2000. Spain was losing 3-2 in the final moments of the game. They needed to win to move forward in the tournament. Spain scored a penalty kick to tie the game. Then, with only seconds left, Alfonso scored a spectacular goal. This amazing shot gave Spain the win!

Alfonso also played in all the matches at UEFA Euro 1996. He scored an important goal against Bulgaria in that tournament. He also played in two games at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Olympic Gold Medal

Alfonso was part of the Spanish national team that won a gold medal. This happened at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. It was a huge achievement for him and his country.

Alfonso's Family and Stadium Name

Alfonso has an older brother, Iván Pérez Muñoz, who was also a footballer. Both brothers came from Real Madrid's youth teams. They even played together for one season at Betis. Later, they reunited on Real Madrid's veterans' team.

The stadium for the Getafe football club, called the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, was named after him. This was special because he never played professionally for his hometown club. However, his name was removed from the stadium in 2023.
