Alfred Emanuel Smith IV (born May 24, 1951 – died November 20, 2019) was an important business leader. He worked on Wall Street, which is a famous financial area in New York City. He was also a senior advisor for a company called the Marwood Group. Besides his business work, he spent a lot of time helping charities. He was on the boards of many groups, like the Tony Blair Faith Foundation and Mutual of America. He also led the board of Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center.

About His Life

Alfred Smith was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on May 24, 1951. He was the great-grandson of a very famous person, Al Smith, who was once the Governor of New York. Alfred grew up in Rye, New York. He went to Iona Preparatory School and then to Villanova University.

Alfred was married to Nan Moore Smith. They had two children, Alfred Emanuel Smith V and Catherine Smith Totero. They also had six grandchildren. He passed away at his home in New Canaan, Connecticut.

His Career

Alfred Smith started his career on Wall Street. He worked as a broker on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1975, he moved to Chicago to work for Mitchell Hutchins as a vice president. He returned to New York in 1979 and became a partner at CMJ Partners. Later, in 1997, he joined Bear Wagner as a managing director.

He also played a big role in the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation. He was a director and helped organize their yearly dinner. He often served as the host for the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner.

In December 2006, after 35 years of working on Wall Street, he retired from his job as managing director at Bear Wagner Specialists LLC. This company was a member firm of the New York Stock Exchange.

Helping Others

Alfred Smith did a lot of charity work in New York and Connecticut. Besides his work with the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation, he helped start and led the Ireland Chamber of Commerce of the USA. He was also a director for the Center for Hope. He served on the board of Saint Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan for many years, from 1986 until it closed in April 2010. He worked hard to help the hospital during its challenges.

Smith was also the chairman of Hackers for Hope. He helped start this group in 1988. Its goal is to raise money for cancer research and treatment. Since 1988, Hackers for Hope has given over $8,000,000 to places like Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Centers Comprehensive Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. These donations help find cures and treatments for cancer. His family had a long history with Saint Vincent's, going back 70 years. Alfred focused on trying to build a new hospital to help the New York community.

He also served as president of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in New York from 2005 to 2007. He was also the president of Kappa Beta Phi.
