The medal honors people who help others. They share their knowledge, bravery, and kindness. They also use their unique skills and are very generous. These people remember their family's heritage. At the same time, they support the important ideas and spirit of America.
Many famous people have received this medal. These include U.S. presidents, world leaders, and even Nobel Prize winners. Leaders from business, education, arts, sports, and government have also been honored. The award also goes to everyday Americans who make a big difference.

About the Award Ceremony
The Ellis Island Honors Society (EIHS) began in 1984. The medals themselves were first given out in 1986.
When and Where the Ceremony Happens
A special ceremony is held every May. It takes place on Ellis Island in New York Harbor. This island was once the main entry point for millions of immigrants coming to the United States.
Who Attends the Ceremony
All parts of the United States Armed Forces usually take part in the ceremony. Both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate have officially recognized this award. Each year, the names of the people who receive the medal are written into the Congressional Record. This is a daily report of what happens in the U.S. Congress.
The gala dinner and ceremony are held in the Great Hall on Ellis Island. This is the same place where immigrants were once processed when they arrived in America. About 100 people receive the medal each year.
