Doris May Roberts (born Green; November 4, 1925 – April 17, 2016) was an American actress. Her acting career lasted for over 60 years. She was famous for her roles in TV shows and movies.
Doris Roberts won five Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild award. She started acting in 1951. She studied acting in New York City. Her first movie was in 1961.
She played many important roles in films. These included The Honeymoon Killers (1970) and Hester Street (1975). She also appeared in Rabbit Test (1978). Later, she was in Madea's Witness Protection (2012).
Roberts became very well-known on television. She played Mildred Krebs in Remington Steele from 1983 to 1987. Her most famous role was Marie Barone. This was Raymond Barone's mother on the TV show Everybody Loves Raymond (1996–2005).
She often appeared on talk shows and game shows. Doris Roberts also cared deeply about animal rights. She supported groups that help animals.

Growing Up
Doris May Green was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Her family came from Russia. Her father left the family when she was young. Her mother, Ann, and her grandparents raised her. They lived in The Bronx, New York.
Doris took her stepfather's last name, Roberts. Her stepfather, Chester H. Roberts, and her mother ran a business. They helped playwrights and actors with their writing.
Her Acting Career
Doris Roberts started her acting career in 1951. Her first TV role was on Studio One. She also appeared in shows like The Naked City and Ben Casey. In 1961, she made her first movie, Something Wild.
Movies and TV Shows
In the 1960s and 1970s, she was in many films. These included The Honeymoon Killers and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. In 1978, she played Jack Ruby's sister in Ruby and Oswald. She also had a small role in The Rose with Bette Midler.
Doris Roberts played Theresa Falco on Angie. Then she became Mildred Krebs on Remington Steele. After that show ended, she was in the TV movie If It's Tuesday, It Still Must Be Belgium (1987). She also appeared in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989).
She played different roles on many TV shows. She was the mother of the main character on Alice. She also played Danny Tanner's mother, Claire, on Full House. She was Flo Flotsky on Soap. She also played Aunt Edna on Step by Step.
Doris Roberts became most famous for her role as Marie Barone. This was on the hit show Everybody Loves Raymond. She was one of 100 actresses considered for the part. For her work on the show, she won four Emmy Awards. She was nominated seven times for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
She had won an Emmy before for playing a homeless woman on St. Elsewhere. In 2003, she got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She also appeared in the movies Our House and Grandma's Boy in 2006.
In 2008, she was in the movie Play the Game. She acted alongside Andy Griffith. In 2009, she was in Aliens in the Attic. She played George Needleman's mother in Madea's Witness Protection (2012).
On September 23, 2010, she played Mrs. Rinsky on The Middle. This show reunited her with Patricia Heaton. Patricia Heaton was her co-star from Everybody Loves Raymond.
Stage Performances
Doris Roberts started her stage career on Broadway in the 1950s. She was in many Broadway shows. These included The Desk Set and The Last of the Red Hot Lovers. She also performed in Bad Habits.
Awards and Recognition
In May 2005, Doris Roberts received an honorary degree. It was from the University of South Carolina. She was given the Ellis Island Medal of Honor on May 7, 2011. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2003.
Helping Others
On September 4, 2002, Doris Roberts spoke to a U.S. Congressional panel. She said that older actors faced unfair treatment in Hollywood. She was a member of the Democratic Party.
Roberts was a strong supporter of animal rights. She worked with Puppies Behind Bars. This group helps inmates train guide dogs and assistance dogs. These dogs help people with disabilities and the elderly. They also train dogs to find explosives for police. She was also the chairwoman for the Children with AIDS Foundation.
Doris Roberts wrote a book with Danelle Morton. It was called Are You Hungry, Dear? Life, Laughs, and Lasagna. The book was published in 2003. It was her life story and included some of her recipes.
Personal Life
Doris Roberts married Michael Cannata in 1956. They divorced in 1962. They had one son together. She also had three grandchildren. Her second husband was the writer William Goyen. They were married from 1963 until he passed away in 1983.
Her Passing
Doris Roberts passed away in her sleep on April 17, 2016. She was 90 years old. She died at her home in Los Angeles after a stroke. She had also been ill for many years.
A month after her death, a tribute was held for her in New York City. It took place at the Ambassador Theatre. This was where she had performed in 1972. Her co-stars from Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton, attended the service.
Ray Romano shared a funny memory about Doris. He said she would often kiss people off-camera. He also said: "She was one of a kind. She can outwork it, outdrink it, good kisser, I was joking! I appreciated her." He also said that even though she played a nosy and bossy character, fans loved her. This was because she showed the love underneath her character's actions.
She was buried at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles, California.
