Who is Ronald Noble?
Early Life and Education
Ron Noble was born in Fort Dix, New Jersey, a U.S. Army base. His father was African-American and his mother was German. He grew up in a nearby town called Jobstown. His father worked as a janitor after serving in the army.
Noble went to Northern Burlington County Regional High School. He then studied at the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1979. He earned a degree in economics and business. Later, he went to Stanford Law School and became an editor for the Stanford Law Review. He graduated with honors in 1982.
Starting a Career in Public Service
After law school, Noble worked for a judge named A. Leon Higginbotham Jr.. This judge encouraged him to work for the public. In 1984, Noble became a U.S. Attorney in Pennsylvania. This job meant he helped the government with legal cases.
In 1988, he moved to Washington, D.C. He worked at the Department of Justice. He was a deputy assistant and chief of staff for the head of the Criminal Division.
Working at the Treasury Department
In 1993, Noble got a big job at the Treasury Department. He was in charge of several important groups. These included the Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). The Secret Service protects leaders like the President.
In 1994, a small plane crashed on the lawn of the White House. Noble helped investigate what happened. This led to a big change: Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House was closed to cars. This was done to make the area safer.
In 1996, Noble went back to teaching law at New York University School of Law.
Leading Interpol
In 1998, Ron Noble decided to apply for the top job at Interpol. Interpol is the world's largest international police organization. It helps police forces from different countries work together. With support from U.S. leaders, Noble was elected Secretary General of Interpol on November 3, 2000.
He was 44 years old, making him the youngest person to hold this role. He was also the first American and the first non-European to lead Interpol. He was re-elected twice, serving until November 7, 2014. He was replaced by Jürgen Stock.
Interpol's Role in Investigations
Interpol helps countries share information about crimes. Sometimes, this involves sensitive situations. For example, in 2011, there was a bomb explosion in the Minsk Metro in Belarus. Noble praised the quick investigation by the local police.
Later, in 2017, a judge in Argentina made some claims. The judge suggested that Noble and a former Argentine President tried to cancel "Red Notices" from Interpol. Red Notices are alerts asking police worldwide to find and arrest someone. These notices were for former Iranian officials linked to a 1994 attack in Buenos Aires. Noble strongly denied these claims, saying the report was "false" and "incomplete."
After Interpol
After leaving Interpol, Noble started his own company. It's called RKN Global DWC LLC and focuses on security advice. It's based in Dubai, UAE.
In 2016, his company planned to build a special printing plant in Slovakia. This plant would print secure documents. The project would cost a lot of money and create many jobs. However, the company later decided not to go ahead with the plan. This was due to political issues in Slovakia and changes related to the UK leaving the European Union.
Personal Life
Ron Noble is married and has one son. Besides English, he can speak French, Spanish, and German.
