Alfred Homer Bennett (born April 1965) is an important judge in the United States. He serves as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. This means he works in a special court that handles many different types of legal cases across a large area of Texas.

About Judge Alfred H. Bennett

Alfred H. Bennett studied hard to become a lawyer and judge. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1988 from the University of Houston. This is a type of college degree. Later, in 1991, he received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas School of Law. This is the degree you need to become a lawyer.

After law school, Judge Bennett worked at different law firms. A law firm is a group of lawyers who work together to help people with legal problems. He worked at Fulbright & Jaworski from 1991 to 1994. Then, he moved to Solar & Fernandes LLP, where he worked until 1998.

From 1998 to 2008, Judge Bennett worked as a sole practitioner. This means he had his own law practice and worked by himself. He helped both individuals and companies with their legal cases in different courts.

Before becoming a federal judge, he served as a judge for the 61st Civil District Court of Texas from 2009 to 2015. From 2010 to 2011, he also served as the administrative judge for the Harris County Civil District Courts. This role meant he helped manage how the courts in Harris County operated.

Becoming a Federal Judge

On September 18, 2014, President Barack Obama chose Alfred Bennett to become a United States district judge. He was nominated to fill a spot in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. This spot became open when Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt took on a "senior status" role, which is like a semi-retirement for judges.

Sometimes, the process of becoming a judge can take time. Judge Bennett's first nomination was sent back to the President because the 113th Congress ended its session. But President Obama nominated him again on January 7, 2015.

Judge Bennett then had a hearing with the Judiciary Committee. This committee is a group of senators who review people nominated for judge positions. After the hearing, the committee voted to approve his nomination.

Finally, on April 13, 2015, the United States Senate voted to confirm him as a judge. The vote was 95 to 0, showing strong support. He officially received his special document, called a judicial commission, on April 15, 2015. This document gave him the power to serve as a federal judge.
