Alfredo Aceves Martínez (born 8 December 1982) is a former professional baseball pitcher from Mexico. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for two famous teams: the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.

Aceves was known for throwing different types of pitches. These included a fast pitch called a fastball, a slower pitch that curves called a curveball, a tricky pitch called a changeup, and a cut fastball. He was very good at controlling where his pitches went and could throw any pitch at any time during a game.

Playing Career Highlights

Starting in Baseball

Alfredo Aceves began his professional baseball journey when he was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001. He played in the Dominican Summer League that year. After a short time, Aceves decided to play closer to home in Mexico. His contract was then bought by the Yucatán Leones in the Mexican League. For the next six seasons, he pitched for Yucatán and the Sultanes de Monterrey.

Time with the New York Yankees

A scout for the New York Yankees noticed Aceves playing in the Mexican League. The Yankees bought his contract in 2007. He started the 2008 season playing for the Yankees' minor league teams. He quickly moved up through the ranks, playing for the Single-A Advanced Tampa Yankees, then the Double-A Trenton Thunder, and finally the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.

Aceves was called up to the Yankees' main team on 28 August 2008. He made his first Major League Baseball appearance on 31 August, pitching two innings without allowing any runs. After pitching well as a relief pitcher, he was given a chance to start games. In his first start, he pitched seven strong innings and earned his first win.

In 2009, Aceves rejoined the Yankees. He was a valuable player because he could pitch well in many different situations. In 2010, he made ten appearances before a back injury ended his season.

Playing for the Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox signed Aceves on 8 February 2011. He spent some time with their Triple-A team, the Pawtucket Red Sox, but was called back up to the main team. On 16 May, he earned his first win with the Red Sox. He had a great record of 9 wins and 1 loss as a relief pitcher for Boston that year.

At the start of the 2012 season, Aceves was named the team's acting closer, which is a pitcher who finishes games. He had a challenging start to the season. He also had some disagreements with his manager that led to a short suspension.

In 2013, after playing in five games, Aceves was sent back to the Triple-A Pawtucket team. He was called up a few times for single games but mostly played in the minor leagues that year. He became a free agent in October.

Other Teams and Later Career

Aceves signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles in January 2014. However, he decided to leave the team before the season started.

He then signed another minor league deal with the New York Yankees on 28 March 2014. He was promoted to the major league team in May. He pitched in 10 games before being sent back to the minor leagues in June. He was released by the Yankees organization in August.

In 2015, Aceves signed with the San Francisco Giants, who assigned him to the Sultanes de Monterrey in the Mexican League. He played for Monterrey for parts of the 2015, 2016, and 2017 seasons.

In May 2017, Aceves signed with the Saraperos de Saltillo of the Mexican League. He played in eight games for them before being released in July 2017.
