Baseball Career
Starting Out
Alfredo Aceves began his baseball journey in 2001. He was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as a young player. He pitched in the Dominican Summer League that year.
However, Aceves decided to return to Mexico in 2002. His contract was then bought by the Yucatán Leones in the Mexican League. For the next six seasons, Aceves pitched for Yucatán and the Sultanes de Monterrey.
Playing for the New York Yankees
A scout for the New York Yankees saw Aceves play in Mexico. The Yankees bought his contract in 2007–08. He started 2008 playing for the Single-A Advanced Tampa Yankees. He quickly moved up to Double-A Trenton Thunder and then to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.
Aceves joined the Yankees in the major leagues on 28 August 2008. On 31 August, he made his first MLB appearance. He pitched two innings without giving up any runs.
After pitching well as a relief pitcher, Aceves became a starting pitcher. In his first start, he pitched seven innings and helped his team win.
In 2009, Aceves rejoined the Yankees. He was known for being able to pitch well in many different game situations. In 2010, he made ten relief appearances. However, a back injury ended his season early. He also broke his collarbone in a bicycle accident later that year.
Time with the Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox signed Aceves on 8 February 2011. He was sent to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox for a short time. But he was called back up on 6 May. On 16 May, he earned his first win with the Red Sox. He had a great record of 9 wins and 1 loss as a relief pitcher that season.
In 2012, Aceves started the season as the team's closer. This meant he was the pitcher who finished games. However, he had a tough start to the season. Alfredo also had some disagreements with his manager, Bobby Valentine, which led to a short suspension.
In 2013, after playing in five games, Aceves was sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket. He was called up a few times for single games. On 14 July, he was removed from the team's main roster. He became a free agent in October.
Other Teams
In January 2014, Aceves signed a deal with the Baltimore Orioles. He later decided to leave the team.
He then signed another deal with the New York Yankees on 28 March 2014. He played for them in May but was later released in August.
In 2015, Aceves signed with the San Francisco Giants. They assigned him to the Sultanes de Monterrey in the Mexican League. He faced a suspension for the rest of the season after a disagreement with an umpire. He continued to play for Sultanes de Monterrey in 2016. He was released in May 2017.
On 19 May 2017, Aceves signed with the Saraperos de Saltillo of the Mexican Baseball League. He was released from that team in July 2017.
Personal Life
Alfredo Aceves married his wife, Arley, in November 2008. He had proposed to her during a baseball game earlier that year.
Baseball runs in his family. His father, Alfredo Aceves Sr., was a first baseman in the Mexican League. His older brother, Jonathan Aceves, was a minor league catcher.
Alfredo Aceves wears the number 91. He chose this number because he admires Dennis Rodman, a famous basketball player who also wore #91. Aceves and Arley have a son named Apollo, who was born on 1 August 2013.
