About San Luis Río Colorado

A Look at Its History

Before Spanish people arrived, the area of San Luis Río Colorado was home to the Halywamai people. They lived there until the mid-1800s. Later, they joined with the Maricopa tribe.

San Luis Río Colorado was once a busy port. Steamships used to travel up the Colorado River from the Gulf of California. However, since the early 1900s, the Colorado River has been used for irrigation. This means most of its water is taken for farms. Now, the river is often dry or just a small stream.

San Luis Río Colorado became an official city in July 1958. It is the main center for the municipality. The city is built on a flat, sandy area called a mesa.

In 2010, on Easter Sunday, a strong earthquake hit the area. It was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. A large department store and five schools were damaged or destroyed. About 30,000 people in the region were affected by the earthquake.
