San Luis Río Colorado is a city in the state of Sonora, Mexico. It is also the name of the area around the city, called a municipality. In 2020, about 176,685 people lived in the city.
This city is the fourth-largest community in Sonora. Its municipality is also the fourth-largest in terms of how many people live there. San Luis Río Colorado is in the northwest part of Sonora. It is right on the border with the state of Baja California. It also sits on the international border with the United States. Right next to it is San Luis, Arizona.

A Look at Its History
Before Spanish people arrived, the area of San Luis Río Colorado was home to the Halywamai people. They lived there until the mid-1800s. Later, they joined with the Maricopa tribe.
San Luis Río Colorado was once a busy port. Steamships used to travel up the Colorado River from the Gulf of California. However, since the early 1900s, the Colorado River has been used for irrigation. This means most of its water is taken for farms. Now, the river is often dry or just a small stream.
San Luis Río Colorado became an official city in July 1958. It is the main center for the municipality. The city is built on a flat, sandy area called a mesa.
In 2010, on Easter Sunday, a strong earthquake hit the area. It was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. A large department store and five schools were damaged or destroyed. About 30,000 people in the region were affected by the earthquake.
What the Climate is Like
San Luis Río Colorado has a desert climate. This means it has very hot summers and mild winters. It is one of the hottest and driest cities in Mexico. The highest temperature ever recorded was 52.0°C (125.6°F) on June 25, 1951. The lowest temperature was -6.5°C (20.3°F) on January 2, 1950.

San Luis Río Colorado has many factories called Maquila factories. These factories assemble products for other countries. Some well-known companies with factories here include TSE Brakes, Daewoo Electronics, Bose, Flextronics, Yazaki, SANA International, and Gaming Partners International.
Getting Around the City
The San Luis Río Colorado Airport used to serve the city. It was for smaller planes, but it was taken down in the early 2020s. The closest international airport is Mexicali International Airport.
San Luis Río Colorado is connected to other parts of Mexico by highways. These include State highway 40 and Mexican Federal Highway 2. There is also a border crossing that connects the city to San Luis, Arizona, in the United States. Many bus companies, like TUFESA, have stops at the San Luis Río Colorado bus station.
