Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno was an important leader from Ecuador. He was born on September 28, 1859, in Guayaquil. He lived a long life, passing away on March 20, 1951.
He was a member of the Ecuadorian Radical Liberal Party. This was a political group that believed in certain ideas for how the country should be run.
Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno served as Vice President of Ecuador from 1903 to 1906. He worked alongside presidents Leónidas Plaza and Lizardo García.
He later became President of Ecuador three different times. His terms were from August to September 1912, September 1916 to August 1920, and October 1931 to August 1932. He also led the Senate for several years.
What He Did as President
Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno is remembered for some very important changes he made. One of his most famous actions was ending a system called concertaje.
Ending Concertaje
Concertaje was a practice where farm workers, especially Indigenous people, were forced to work. They were tied to their jobs because of old debts. It was almost like being stuck in a job you couldn't leave.
This system meant that workers on large farms, called haciendas, were often treated unfairly. They couldn't leave their jobs until their debts were paid. This could be very difficult, and sometimes impossible.
President Baquerizo Moreno made it illegal to keep people working because of these debts. This was a big step towards fairer treatment for many workers in Ecuador. It helped to give them more freedom.
His Time in Office
His first time as president was short, from August to September 1912. He then served a full term from 1916 to 1920. During this time, he worked to improve the country.
His last time as president was from 1931 to 1932. His time as president ended during a period of big changes in Ecuador.
