Communities in Algansee Township
- Algansee is a small, unincorporated community within the township. This means it's a recognized place but doesn't have its own separate local government. It's located at 41°49′57″N 84°52′51″W / 41.83250°N 84.88083°W.
The first land here was bought on September 12, 1835, by Jedehiah Jessup. He was from Monroe County, New York. The first people to settle permanently were Luther Stiles and Ludovico Robbins. They arrived in the winter of 1836–1837. Jessup also built a sawmill. A post office opened in Algansee on July 19, 1845. It stayed open until January 14, 1905.
History of Algansee Township
Algansee Township was officially created by the state government on April 2, 1838. It was formed from the southern part of Quincy Township. At first, it stretched all the way south to the Indiana state line.
The early residents wanted to name the new township Carlton. However, for reasons unknown, it was named Algansee when it was formally established. The original records that might explain these names have been lost.
Algansee Township got its current shape on March 25, 1846. This happened when California Township was separated from its southern section.

Algansee Township covers a total area of about 36.09 square miles (93.47 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 35.53 square miles (92.02 square kilometers). A smaller part, about 0.56 square miles (1.45 square kilometers), is water. This means about 1.55% of the township is covered by water.
People of Algansee Township
In 2000, there were 2,061 people living in Algansee Township. These people lived in 746 households. About 561 of these households were families. The population density was about 58.0 people per square mile.
Many households, 31.5%, had children under 18 living with them. Most households, 65.4%, were married couples. About 20.5% of all households were made up of single individuals.

Notable People from Algansee Township
- Raymond Culver was born in Algansee Township. He became an important educator. He was the fourth president of Shimer College.
