Ali Akbar Velayati (born 24 June 1945) is an Iranian politician and a doctor. He is known for his long career in government. He is currently a member of the Expediency Discernment Council. This council helps the Supreme Leader of Iran by giving advice and settling disagreements between different parts of the government.

Velayati is also a respected professor at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. He works as a senior advisor to the Supreme Leader on international matters. He also leads the board of trustees for the Islamic Azad University, which is a large university system in Iran.

He has held many important roles, including being a member of the Iranian Science and Culture Hall of Fame. He was also the Minister of Foreign Affairs for over 15 years. This was from December 1981 to August 1997. He served under Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Presidents Ali Khamenei and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. He is the only person to have held this foreign minister position for more than ten years.

Early Life and Education

Velayati was born in Rostamabad village, near Tehran, Iran, on 24 June 1945. He began his medical studies at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 1964. After finishing his studies in pediatrics (children's medicine), he went to Johns Hopkins University in the United States. There, he specialized in infectious diseases.

While studying and working, Velayati also taught at the university. He was an active member of important groups like the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution. He continues to be a member of the Expediency Discernment Council and the Islamic Encyclopedia Foundation.

Political Career

Ali Akbar Velayati has held many different positions in the Iranian government. He is known for having a large number of official roles and responsibilities throughout his career.

In 1961, Velayati joined the National Front, which was a political party. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, he was elected to the Iranian parliament in 1980. He also served as a deputy minister of health from November 1980 to July 1981.

In October 1981, after becoming president, Ali Khamenei suggested Velayati to be his prime minister. However, the parliament did not approve this. Later, Mir-Hossein Mousavi was approved as prime minister. During Mousavi's time as prime minister, Velayati served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He continued in this role when Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani became president, serving until 1997. Since 1997, he has been an advisor on international affairs to the Supreme Leader of Iran.

In October 2013, Velayati became the head of the Center for Strategic Research. This is a place where important studies and plans for the country are made.

2005 Election

In 2005, some conservative political groups in Iran thought Velayati might run for president. However, he decided not to run in that election.

2013 Election

Velayati announced that he would run for president in the 2013 Iranian presidential election. He received support from some conservative groups. During his campaign, he talked about having strong relationships with other countries. He also wanted to improve diplomatic ties with Europe and the United States. He received about 6.4% of the votes, coming in fifth place among the candidates.

Personal Life

On 12 March 2020, it was reported that Ali Akbar Velayati had tested positive for COVID-19. He was reported to be recovering under quarantine.
