Alexandra Dawn Wong (born April 19, 1982) is a talented American comedian, actress, writer, producer, and director. She is famous for her stand-up comedy shows on Netflix, like Baby Cobra (2016) and Hard Knock Wife (2018). She also starred in the romantic comedy movie Always Be My Maybe (2019), which she helped write and produce.
Ali Wong has won many awards for her work. She received three Golden Globe Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards. She won these for her role in the Netflix series Beef. This made her the first Asian woman to win a lead acting Emmy. Time magazine also named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2020 and 2023.
Wong was a cast member on the TV show American Housewife. She also appeared on Inside Amy Schumer and Black Box. She worked as a writer for the first three seasons of the TV show Fresh Off the Boat. You might also know her voice from animated series. She voiced Bertie in Tuca & Bertie and Ali in Big Mouth.

Early Life and Education
Alexandra Dawn Wong was born in San Francisco, California, on April 19, 1982. She was the youngest of four children in her family. Her mother, Tam "Tammy" Wong, came from Huế, Vietnam, in 1960. She worked as a social worker in the U.S. Ali's father, Adolphus Wong, was Chinese-American. He was a doctor who helped people sleep during operations for 30 years.
In 2000, Ali graduated from San Francisco University High School. She was even the student body class president there. After high school, she went to UCLA. She studied Asian-American history and culture. During her third year, she spent time studying in Hanoi, Vietnam. After college, she continued to study in Vietnam through a special program called Fulbright.
Comedy and Acting Career
After college, Ali Wong started doing stand-up comedy when she was 23. She moved to New York City to focus on comedy. She would perform many times in one night, sometimes up to nine shows!
In 2011, Variety magazine recognized her as one of the "10 Comics to Watch." Soon after, she appeared on popular TV shows like The Tonight Show. She also had roles in TV series such as Are You There, Chelsea? and Black Box. She was also a writer for the sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, which started in 2015.
On Mother's Day in 2016, Netflix released her first stand-up special, Baby Cobra. She filmed this show in Seattle when she was seven months pregnant with her first child. This special made her very famous. In 2018, her second Netflix special, Hard Knock Wife, came out. She filmed this one in Toronto when she was seven months pregnant with her second child.
Ali Wong starred with actor Randall Park in the 2019 Netflix movie Always Be My Maybe. She also helped write and produce this film. From 2019 to 2022, she voiced the character Bertie in the animated show Tuca & Bertie. In 2019, she also wrote a book called Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets and Advice for Living Your Best Life. She wrote it as a guide for her daughters when they grow up.
In February 2022, her third Netflix stand-up special, Don Wong, was released. In 2023, Ali Wong starred with Steven Yeun in the Netflix series Beef. She also worked as an executive producer for the show. For her amazing performance in Beef, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. She was the first actress of Asian descent to win these major awards in these categories.
Personal Life
Ali Wong met Justin Hakuta in 2010 at a friends' wedding. Justin was studying at Harvard Business School at the time. They got married in 2014 and have two daughters. In April 2022, Ali and Justin announced they had separated. They later divorced in December 2023. Ali has said they remain "best friends."
