Alicia Moreau de Justo (born October 11, 1885 – died May 12, 1986) was an Argentine doctor, peace activist, and champion for human rights. She was a very important leader in the movements for feminism (equal rights for women) and socialism (a political idea focused on fairness for everyone) in Argentina. From the early 1900s, she actively worked to open up more rights for women. In 1902, she and other activists started the Feminist Socialist Center of Argentina and the Feminine Work Union of Argentina. These groups helped women get more involved and fight for their rights.

Her Life and Work

Alicia Moreau de Justo was born on October 11, 1885.

She gave many talks at the Fundación Luz (Light Foundation). She also helped her father start the Ateneo Popular (the People's Athenaeum). She was the main editor for the magazine Humanidad Nueva (New Humanity). Later, she directed another publication called Nuestra Causa (Our Cause). In 1914, she finished college and became a medical doctor. A few years later, she joined the Socialist Party. Soon after, she married the politician Juan B. Justo. They had three children together.

By 1918, Alicia had founded the Unión Feminista Nacional (National Feminist Union). After her husband passed away in 1928, she kept working in politics. She continued to defend women's rights, especially their right to vote. She also fought for fair working conditions for paid staff. Public health and education were also very important to her. In 1932, she wrote a proposed law to give women the right to vote. This law was finally approved in Argentina in 1947.

She supported the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. She often criticized Peronism, a political movement in Argentina, saying it was against democracy. In 1958, she helped divide the Socialist Party and create the Argentinean Socialist Party. She became the director of the newspaper La Vanguardia until 1960. Alicia Moreau de Justo kept working until she was very old. In 1975, she was one of the people who started the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights. This group works to protect human rights.

The Argentinean Feminist Union

Alicia Moreau de Justo helped create the National Feminist Union in Argentina. Its goal was to bring together different groups that were fighting for women's rights at that time. Some of these groups included the Feminist Socialist Center, the Feminine Socialist Gathering, and the National Council of Women.

The National Feminist Union worked hard to pass many laws. These laws recognized women's rights and protected women in their jobs. They also helped single mothers. This organization published a monthly magazine called Nuestra Causa. This magazine helped spread their ideas and organize women activists. It also encouraged people to sign large petitions for the government.
