Alix is a village in central Alberta, Canada. It is located northeast of the city of Red Deer. The village has a fun mascot, the Alix-Gator, which you can see on many signs and businesses around town.

History of Alix

The area was first known as Toddsville, named after Joseph Todd. On June 3, 1907, the settlement officially became a village. It was then renamed Alix. This new name honored Alexia Westhead, who was the first white woman to settle in the community. Alix was her nickname. The first mayor of Alix was Robert F. Sanderson. He also owned and operated the general store in the village.

Irene Parlby and the Famous Five

Alix Westhead was good friends with Irene Marryat. In 1896, Alix invited Irene to visit. While there, Irene met a local farmer named Walter Parlby. They married, and Irene became Mrs. Parlby, making Alix her new home. Irene Parlby later became one of the "Famous Five." This was a group of five women who worked hard to gain more rights for women in Canada.

Irene Parlby's public work started in 1913. She was chosen as the secretary for the Alix Country Women's Club. Her role grew when she became President of the United Farmers of Alberta's (UFA) Women's Auxiliary. From 1921 to 1935, she served as the local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Her political career reached a high point in 1921. She was appointed a cabinet minister when the UFA formed the government of Alberta. She held this important position for 14 years. In 1935, the University of Alberta gave her an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. After their deaths, Parlby and the other members of the Famous Five were named honorary senators in 2009.

Population of Alix

In 2021, the Village of Alix had a population of 774 people. These residents lived in 343 homes. This was a small increase from its population of 734 people in 2016. The village covers a land area of 3.11 square kilometers (about 1.2 square miles). This means about 249 people lived in each square kilometer in 2021.
