All Saints' Church in Freshwater, Isle of Wight is a very old and important parish church. It is part of the Church of England.

A Look Back in Time

All Saints' Church is truly ancient! It was built a very long time ago, during the Middle Ages. It is one of the oldest churches you can find on the Isle of Wight. This church was even written about in the Domesday Book in 1086. The Domesday Book was a huge survey ordered by King William the Conqueror. It recorded details about land and property all over England.

Today, All Saints' is an Anglican church. It is part of the Anglican Diocese of Portsmouth. The current vicar is Revd Leisa Potter. A primary school is also located close to the church.

Famous People Remembered Here

Many important people are remembered at All Saints' Church. You can find a special marble memorial for Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson. He was a very famous poet. His wife, Emily Tennyson, Baroness Tennyson, and his son, Hallam Tennyson, 2nd Baron Tennyson, are buried in the churchyard. Other family members are also buried there.

There is also a memorial for Tennyson's son, Lionel Tennyson. He sadly passed away in 1886. Inside the church, you will see plaques remembering members of the Crozier Family. They used to live nearby. Lady Mary Martin is also remembered on a plaque. Her maiden name was Crozier. Admiral Crozier is buried close to Lord Tennyson in a large tomb. The special entrance gate, called a lychgate, was built to remember the Crozier Family.

The churchyard also has 20 graves for soldiers who died in wars. These are called Commonwealth war graves. Fifteen of these are from World War I, including one unknown sailor. Five graves are from World War II. A member of the Tennyson family is among those from World War I.

The Church Organ

The church has a beautiful organ. It was built in 1905 by a company called Henry Speechley and Sons.
