Allanson is a small town in the South West part of Western Australia. It sits right next to the Collie River. You can find it about 8 kilometers (5 miles) west-northwest of a bigger town called Collie. A main road, the Coalfields Highway, goes right through Allanson.
History of Allanson
Allanson started because of coal mining. In 1898, land was set aside for coal miners. This allowed them to live close to the mines where they worked. A railway station opened in the same year. It was called West Collie.
The First Townsite
The first townsite was officially named West Collie in 1906. But later, people found out that there was a lot of valuable coal right under the town! Because of this, they decided to move the town.
A New Location and Name
A new townsite was started in 1911, not far from the first one. This new town was officially recognized in 1912. Its name was changed to Allanson in 1916. The town was named after Arthur Alan Wilson. He was a politician who represented the area in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. He served from 1908 to 1947.
Allanson's Bush School
Allanson had a special bush school that was open from 1911 to 1989. After it closed, the community worked to restore it. In 2002, the school building was brought back to life. A book called A History of Allanson: Our Little Bush School shares memories of the school and the people who lived in the community.
