Allegany is a small village in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,596 people lived here. The village is in the eastern part of the town of Allegany. It is located west of the city of Olean.
St. Bonaventure University is a college found just south of the village.
History of Allegany
The village of Allegany officially became a village in 1906. This means it got its own local government. Before that, it was known by a different name: "Burton." You can still find a bar and hotel in town called "The Burton" today.
Where is Allegany Located?
Allegany is a small place, covering about 0.78 square miles (2.03 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny bit being water.
The village is located north of the Allegheny River. A main road, New York State Route 417, goes right through the village. For faster travel, the Southern Tier Expressway (which is also Interstate 86 and New York State Route 17) passes north of Allegany. You can get to the village from Exit 24 on this expressway.
